Birds of Tanzania
"African Safari" usually creates mental images of the marauding big cats, a herd of majestic elephants, or tens of thousands of migrating wildebeest polka dotted with zebra. But the birds are extraordinary as well. One can generally spot a fine variety of birds on any game drive. But on our second trip to Tanzania in 2010, one particular driver/guide was an accomplished birder so Jean and I asked that we emphasize searching for birds one early one morning as we descended into the Ngorongoro Crater. Although we learned later from other vehicles in our group that we had missed a pride of lions stalking some cape buffalo, we had a memorable opportunity to observe and photograph an array of colorful and energetic oft-missed birds. These images are a selection from both Tanzania trips.
